Big Horn Polo Club: Wyoming Polo Since the 1890s

The short answer: Big Horn Polo Club is in Big Horn, Wyoming, just south of Sheridan, where polo has been played since the 1890s. The season runs from the first week of June through Labor Day, and Sunday games in July and August are free to watch. I arrived after the season had ended, and a member showed me around anyway. It was one of the most peaceful polo fields I've ever seen.

These notes come from my 2021 and 2022 tour, when I tried to visit every polo club in America as a playing USPA member. Seasons, contacts, and prices change, so check each club's Instagram or the U.S. Polo Association before you go.

Big Horn at a glance

  • Where: Big Horn, Wyoming, south of Sheridan, below the Bighorn Mountains.

  • History: Polo in Big Horn goes back to the 1890s (WyoHistory.org). According to the neighboring Flying H Polo Club, a Scotsman named Malcolm Moncreiffe built a polo field here in 1898 and shipped Wyoming-bred horses to England.

  • Season: The first week of June through Labor Day (Sheridan Travel and Tourism).

  • Watching: Sunday games in July and August are free.

  • Neighbor: The Flying H Polo Club is next door, so the area has two clubs.

My visit

I messaged the club on Facebook, and they replied that the season was done. Then Trent, a member, offered to show me around.

The field was so peaceful. One of the most peaceful fields I've ever seen.

Trent's own story is a good one. He got into polo because a friend's parent invited him. He played bike polo too, and now he's 12 horses deep. He lives in Big Horn all year.

Why the grass matters

Trent told me it's cheap to keep a string of horses in Big Horn because the grass is so good. You only need to feed hay about three months of the year. Feed is a big part of what horses cost, so that's a real advantage. (My real numbers for lessons, chukkers, and gear are in how much polo costs.)

Pros come up for the three-month season and live in a neighborhood on a golf course nearby.

Tips for visiting

  • Come in July or August if you want to watch free Sunday polo.

  • Check both clubs. Big Horn and the Flying H are neighbors.

  • Make it a Wyoming polo summer. Jackson Hole plays in summer too. Read my Jackson Hole visit.

  • Know the calendar. Mountain polo is summer polo. See when polo season is across the country.
