The short answer: Meadowview Farm Polo Club is in Lowell, Michigan, outside Grand Rapids. It has an indoor arena, an outdoor arena, and a grass field that's honestly one of the best fields I've ever seen. It's low-goal, friendly, and small (fewer than 20 members when I visited), and the indoor arena means they play through the winter.
These notes come from my 2021 and 2022 tour, when I tried to visit every polo club in America as a playing USPA member. Seasons, contacts, and prices change, so check each club's Instagram or the U.S. Polo Association before you go.
Meadowview Farm at a glance
Where: Lowell, Michigan, east of Grand Rapids, on an 80-acre family farm (Rapid Growth Media).
Facilities: An indoor arena, an outdoor arena, and a grass field.
Level: Low-goal and friendly.
Season: Grass polo in summer, and arena polo through the winter, including January.
Polo school: Katie Johnson, whose family owns the farm, started a polo school there, and a not-for-profit arm of the farm runs the club's tournaments.
My visit
I emailed and texted Katie and sent an Instagram message, and when I got there, I met Pete. Pete was extremely nice and kind. The horses were huge, everyone was very friendly, and the whole place had a low-goal, have-fun feel.
Then I saw the grass. My notes from that day say "best field ever." Really gorgeous grass. The outdoor arena is built on a slope, and there's an indoor arena too, so polo doesn't stop when Michigan freezes. They play right through the winter, including January.
Why the indoor arena matters
Most polo in the upper Midwest stops by fall. On my tour, I missed clubs in Minnesota and Iowa because their seasons had already ended. An indoor arena changes that and keeps riders on horses all year. Michigan State's polo team plays through the winter indoors too.
If you live somewhere with real winters, ask local clubs about indoor arena polo before you give up on the off season. More in when polo season is.
Who should go
If you're near Grand Rapids, this is the club I'd visit first. A small membership, kind people, and some of the best grass I saw anywhere. If you're new, ask about the polo school.
