New Orleans Polo Club: Four Big Fields in Folsom, Louisiana

The short answer: New Orleans Polo Club is in Folsom, Louisiana, north of Lake Pontchartrain, and it plays across several member farms in spring and fall. When I visited, it had four big, beautiful fields for only about 28 members, beautiful clubhouses, and everything was clean and organized. I had an amazing hangout session with Doug, the club manager, and left with a hat and a jersey.

These notes come from my 2021 and 2022 tour, when I tried to visit every polo club in America as a playing USPA member. Seasons, contacts, and prices change, so check each club's Instagram or the U.S. Polo Association before you go.

New Orleans Polo Club at a glance

  • Where: Folsom, in St. Tammany Parish, about an hour from New Orleans. The club plays on four member-owned farms within a five-mile radius (U.S. Polo Association).

  • Season: Spring and fall, about six and a half months of play in total (USPA).

  • Level: From 0- to 2-goal polo up to 4- to 6-goal polo.

  • Beginners: A Champagne League with discounted fees, where beginners play slow chukkers with a professional mentor on each team.

  • Charity polo: The Harvest Cup Polo Classic, run by the Junior League of Greater Covington, usually draws around 2,000 spectators.

My visit

Doug and I had an amazing hangout session, and I left with a hat and a jersey. The clubhouses are beautiful, everything is very clean and organized, and the fields are big. Four big fields for only about 28 members. Stunning.

Why visiting players should go

  • Visitors are invited. The club president has told the USPA he wants visiting players to "stay at our farms and play some 4-goal or 6-goal polo."

  • A good stop on the road. The USPA describes the club as a rest stop for players driving between Florida and Texas or California.

  • New Orleans is nearby. Polo in the day, the city at night.

Tips for visiting

  • Come in spring or fall. The club's seasons skip the hottest months. See when polo season is.

  • Contact the club manager first. Games move between farms, so ask where to go.

  • Watch the Harvest Cup. It's an easy first visit if you're coming to watch.

  • Traveling with a mallet? Read how to play polo when you travel.
